La importancia de la educación financiera en México

Durante los últimos años, el gobierno federal, en conjunto con instituciones financieras, organizaciones y empresas del sector privado, han realizado esfuerzos importantes para desarrollar un sistema financiero más estable, sólido e incluyente. Sin embargo, a pesar de ello, en México sólo el 44% de los adultos entre 18 y 70 años (33,6 millones) cuentan con alguna cuenta en una institución financiera formal (ya sea cuenta bancaria, de nómina, ahorro o pensión, entre otras) y del restante 56% de adultos, 3 de cada 4 nunca han sido usuarios del sistema financiero, mientras que 1 de cada 4 personas son ex usuarios del sistema financiero formal mexicano.

Incluso, el comportamiento de consumo de los mexicanos en general muestra que 9 de cada 10 mexicanos prefieren utilizar dinero en efectivo como principal medio de pago. Y esto lo hacen ya sea por costumbre, desconfianza o porque creen tener mejor control de sus gastos, sin considerar que esta práctica los expone a robos, pérdida de valor de su dinero, descontrol y un consumo en exceso.

Diversos organismos internacionales señalan que cualquier esfuerzo de inclusión financiera debe acompañarse de políticas y programas de educación financiera que provean conocimientos a las personas respecto de los distintos productos y servicios financieros disponibles, así como de sus riesgos y beneficios, lo cual les permitirá tomar decisiones adecuadas a sus necesidades. La última Encuesta Nacional de Inclusión Financiera reveló que solo un 17% de las personas comparó antes de adquirir un producto de ahorro, un 29% de crédito y un 28% de seguro. Esto genera pago de mayores comisiones, intereses y cuotas anuales en detrimento del ingreso de las personas. En materia de conocimientos y capacidades financieras, la Encuesta de Capacidades Financieras para México del Banco Mundial mostró que el 41% de los mexicanos planifican…
